How the K53 Learner's Licence Test Works

Everything you need to know before you sit the South African learner's licence test — the sections, the number of questions, the pass marks, and what to expect on the day.

What is the learner's licence test?

The K53 learner's licence is the first step to getting your South African driving licence. It is a written, multiple-choice test that proves you understand the road signs, the rules of the road, and the controls of a vehicle before you start learning to drive on a public road. You must hold a valid learner's licence before you can take a driving (K53) test.

The three sections and the pass marks

The test is divided into three sections. Importantly, you must pass every section on its own — a great score in one part cannot rescue a fail in another. Overall this works out to roughly a 78% pass requirement.

Some testing centres use a 64-question version (28 rules + 28 signs + 8 controls). The structure and the "pass every section" rule are the same — always confirm the current format with your local testing centre.

What does the test cover?

Vehicle codes

You choose a vehicle code before the test, and your questions are tailored to it:

How to book and what to bring

You apply at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC). In general you'll need your ID, a few recent ID photos, the application form, the fee, and you'll do a quick eyesight test. Requirements and fees vary by province and centre, so check with your local DLTC before you go.

How long is a learner's licence valid?

A learner's licence is valid for 24 months. You must obtain your driving licence within that period, otherwise you'll have to write the learner's test again.
